Lift and Inspection Equipment

installations or mechanisms used for the servicing and repair of automobiles. Such equipment makes all parts of an automobile accessible. The principal types are inspection pits, service racks, and lifts.

Inspection pits may be designed for servicing one automobile at a time, or they may consist of a long trench for the continuous servicing of several automobiles. When it is necessary to suspend the wheels, additional lifting hydraulic or hydropneumatic devices are used.

Service racks are used chiefly for servicing automobiles outdoors and consist of a pair of suspended wheel tracks with inclined ramps for ascent and descent.

Lifts permit an automobile to be raised and positioned at various heights above floor level. They are divided into hydraulic, pneumatic, and electromechanical. The design of electromechanical lifts depends on the number of columns, usually two or four. Screw mechanisms in the columns are used to lift the frame; nuts that carry the frame are moved along the screws by an electric motor.
