Established: 1937.
Location:Eastern Maine, 90 miles northeast of Bangor.
Facilities:Visitor contact station, viewing sites, hiking trails.
Activities:Fishing, hiking, mountain biking, hunting, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, educational programs.
Special Features:The woodlands of the refuge are home to many songbirds, including neotropical migrants. In mid-May, a flush of migrating warblers fills the forest with song; 26 species of these little birds nest on the refuge. Northern forest species such as boreal chickadees and spruce grouse are also present.
Habitats: 28,751 acres of rolling hills, large ledge outcrops, streams, lakes, bogs, marshes, hardwood forest, and rocky shoreline.
Access: Open from dawn to dusk.
Wild life: American woodcock. Also provides habitat for wood ducks, bald eagles, osprey, grouse, bear and moose.
