a warm current along the northern coast of the Scandinavian and Kola peninsulas, a branch of the Norwegian Current. The average annual temperature of the water along the current’s axis ranges from 4° to 8°C. The current’s velocity is 1.0–2.5 cm per sec, and its salinity is 34–35 parts per thousand. The current prevents the southwestern part of the Barents Sea from freezing.
