networked DVR

networked DVR

A digital video recorder (DVR) service that lets people save their digital TV programs on the cable provider's servers and retrieve them on demand. It eliminates the local DVR, such as a Tivo, PC DVR or cable box with built-in DVR, the latter typically very low-cost equipment. The concept was introduced in the 2004-2005 time frame, but was tangled up in the courts until 2008. The fast forward control may be disabled during playback of recorded commercials. See DVR.
