Luigi Bianchi

Bianchi, Luigi

Born Jan. 18,1856, in Parma; died June 6, 1928, in Pisa. Italian geometer.

From 1886, Bianchi was a teacher at the University of Pisa. He contributed numerous works that furthered the development of methods of expressing geometric invariants—that is, quantities whose values do not depend on the choice of coordinates—in terms of so-called differential parameters. Bianchi’s investigations are assembled in his Lectures on Differential Geometry (1886).
