Kyi Chu

(Skyid Chu), a river in China, in southern Tibet, a left-bank tributary of the Brahmaputra. It is about 450 km long and drains an area of about 26,000 sq km. It originates on the southern slope of the Nyenchhen Thanglah Mountains, and in its upper reaches flows to the southeast through a deep valley. In its lower reaches, the valley broadens and turns to the southwest. There is high water in the summer as a result of rains and melting snow and low water in the winter. The Kyi Chu’s valley is an important agricultural region of Tibet. The city of Lhasa and many Buddhist monasteries are situated on its banks.
