Kyrk, Hazel

(1886–1957) consumer economist; born in Ashley, Ohio. A University of Chicago Ph.D., she taught economics there (1925–52) and became a forceful advocate for consumer protection. She wrote the classic Theory of Consumption (1923) and contributed to the Bureau of Home Economics' 20-volume Consumer Purchases Study (1938–41), which established a baseline for what became the Consumer Price Index.
