Marschall von Bieberstein, Adolf, Baron

(ä`dôlf mär`shäl fən bē`bərshtīn), 1842–1912, German diplomat. After years in the administrative service of Baden and as a member of its legislature's upper chamber, he entered imperial service and was secretary of state of foreign affairs (1890–97). He advocated a strong navy and a strong imperial policy. As ambassador at Constantinople (1897–1912), he was responsible for the Baghdad Railway negotiations, and the increase of German economic and political influence in Turkey. In 1907 he was chief German delegate to the Hague Conference, where he helped block disarmament projects. Just before his death he was appointed ambassador to Great Britain.
