Kyzylkak

 

a bitter salt lake without an outlet in Pavlodar Oblast, Kazakh SSR. Area, 188 sq km; average depth, approximately 1 m. The lake is situated at an elevation of 41 m, in the lowest part of the vast lake basin west of Lake Seletyteniz. The banks are precipitous; the flat bottom is covered with black silt, rich in hydrogen sulfide. The lake is fed primarily by snow. It does not freeze in winter owing to its high salinity. The Karasu and Aksuat rivers empty into Lake Kyzylkak.
