Kálnoky, Gustav
Born Dec. 29, 1832, in Lettowitz; diedFeb. 13, 1898, in Prodlitz. Austro-Hungarian statesman anddiplomat. From 1871 to 1874 he was the Austro-Hungarianrepresentative at the Vatican. In 1874 he became envoy to Denmark; in 1880, ambassador to Russia. From 1881 to 1895, Kalnoky was minister of foreign affairs. He facilitated theestablishment of the Triple Alliance of 1882. Kalnoky’s policywas characterized by plans to establish Austro-Hungarian hegemony in the Balkans with the aid of Germany, after weakening Russia’s position there.
