Ogosta

 

a river in northwestern Bulgaria; a right tributary of the Danube. Length, 144 km; basin area, more than 3,000 sq km. It rises in the western Stara Planina (Balkan Mountains), in the hills of Chiprovska Planina near the border with Yugoslavia. Below the city of Mikhailovgrad it crosses a hilly plateau. The average water discharge in the lower course is 18 cu m per sec. The Ogosta is used for irrigation. There is a hydroelectric power plant on the river. The Ogosta is not navigable.
