Labinsk

 

(until 1947, the stanitsa [large cossack village] of Labinskaia), a city in Krasnodar Krai, RSFSR. It is located on the Laba River (tributary of the Kuban’), at the place where the river enters a plain from the foothills. Railroad station (Labinskaia) on the Kurgannaia-Shedok branch of the Armavir-Sam-tredia line. Population, 53,000 (1972). A center of the krai’s food-processing industry, Labinsk is the site of a cannery (primarily canned vegetables and fruit), an oil-extraction plant, a brewery, a sugar refinery, a dairy combine, and a food-processing combine. It also has a machine-building plant (producing equipment for livestock farms), a chemical plant, footwear and garment factories, a combine for the production of forest goods, and enterprises for the manufacture of containers. There is a technicum for the mechanization of agriculture and a medical school. Labinsk was founded as a fortress in the middle of the 19th century.
