(ŏl″ĭ-gō-dĕn′drō-blăst) [″ + Gr. dendron, tree, + blastos, germ] A glial cell precursor that develops from a neuroectoderm cell in the neural tube or from a subependymal cell in the nervous system and that gives rise to a mature oligodendrocyte, which can myelinate axons.
