Location:Northwestern corner of Michigan's upper peninsula, near Wisconsin state line. Accessible by US 2 and 45; MI 28 and 64. Nearby cities/towns include Bessemer, Iron River, Ironwood, Kenton, Ontonagon, Trout Creek, Wakefield, and Watersmeet.
Facilities:Visitor center, 22 campgrounds, group camps, dispersed camping, picnic sites, trails (200 miles), boat launches, scenic drives, ski areas.
Activities:Camping, hunting, fishing, boating, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, hiking, mountain biking, cross-country and downhill skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing, snowshoeing.
Special Features:500 named lakes, 2,000 miles of streams, and numerous waterfalls; 108 miles of the North Country National Scenic Trail (see entry in national trails section); Black River Harbor, the Forest Service's only Great Lakes harbor. Portions of the forest receive more than 200 inches of snow annually.
