Minnesota Orchestra,

founded 1903. Since 1974 its home has been Orchestra Hall in downtown Minneapolis. The orchestra was one of the first to be recorded (early 1920s) and featured in a radio broadcast (1923). In addition to traditional concerts, it frequently commissions and performs contemporary music and offers young people's programs and pops concerts. Its first music director was Emil Oberhoffer, who held the podium from 1903 to 1922. Subsequent conductors have included Eugene OrmandyOrmandy, Eugene
, 1899–1985, American conductor, b. Budapest. At the age of five Ormandy entered the Budapest Conservatory, where he studied the violin. Graduating in 1914, he became a member of the faculty.
