outpatient referral

A term defined by the NHS as a referral which occurs when a patient is referred to specialist outpatient services, usually by means of a standard outpatient referral letter.

Patient’s GP, A&E doctor, a dental practitioner, a community dental officer, another consultant in a different specialty, a consultant in the same specialty referring on medical grounds, a consultant referring the patient to him- or herself in a different specialty, a consultant referring the patient to a joint specialty clinic, self-referral by the patient.
