Labor Colony for Minors

in the USSR from 1935 to 1969, a correctional labor institution where persons under 18 years of age who had been sentenced to deprivation of freedom served their terms. There were two kinds of labor colonies for minors: general colonies and special colonies for youths convicted of serious crimes. The convicted minors were kept in the colonies until the end of their terms, the early termination of their sentences, or their attainment of majority; upon coming of age, they were usually transferred to correctional labor colonies for adults. Since 1969 minors have served their terms at educational labor colonies.
