Martynov, Andrei Vasil’evich

Born Aug. 9(21), 1879, in Riazan’; died Jan. 29, 1938, in Moscow. Soviet entomologist.

Martynov graduated from Moscow University in 1902. In 1906 he went to the University of Warsaw, and from 1917 to 1921, worked at the university of the Don and the North Caucasus. In 1921 he went to Leningrad to work at the Zoological Museum (since 1931 the Zoological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR) and simultaneously from 1921 to 1930, was professor at the Institute of Applied Zoology and Phytopathology. In 1935 he went to the Paleontological Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in Moscow. He was one of the founders of paleoentomology. On the basis of his study of the morphology of wings, he worked out a general system for insects, dividing them into Palaeoptera and Neoptera. He was the first to produce surveys of fossil insects of the Jurassic and Permian fauna on the territory of the USSR (according to their locations) and on the historical development of insects in relation to the earth’s geological past. He produced works on taxonomy, morphology, ecology, and zoogeography of Trichoptera and Amphipoda.
