Liimand, Kaarel

(until 1937, Karl Liiman). Born Apr. 29 (May 12), 1906, in Rapla; died August 1941. Estonian painter and graphic artist. Member of the CPSU from 1940.

Liimand studied in Tallinn at A. Laikmaa’s studio and the School of Industrial Arts (1920–25) and in Tartu at the Pallas Higher School of Arts (1926–33) with A. Babbe. Liimand also taught at the Pallas School beginning in 1935. He was a representative of the democratic wing of Estonian art in the 1930’s. Liimand’s portraits, genre compositions, and landscapes are distinguished by a mood of lyrical contemplation and decorative color combinations—for example, The Harvest (1937) and the portrait of the poetess D. Vaarandi (1940, Tartu Museum of Art). Liimand perished in the struggle with the fascist German invaders.
