Mergelian, Sergei Nikitovich

Born May 19, 1928, in Simferopol’. Soviet mathematician. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953) and academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR (1956). Member of the CPSU since 1955.

A graduate of the University of Yerevan (1947), Mergelian worked there between 1945 and 1957. From 1954 to 1958 and from 1964 to 1968 he worked at Moscow University. From 1956 to 1960 he was director of the Scientific Research Institute of Mathematical Machines and of the Computing Center of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR. Between 1961 and 1971 he worked at the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. In 1971 he became vice-president of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR.

Mergelian’s principal works deal with the theory of functions of a complex variable, the theory of approximation, and the theory of the potential and harmonic functions. One of the deputies to the fifth through eighth convocations of the Supreme Soviet of the Armenian SSR, Mergelian was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in 1952.
