Towerlike in appearance, the structures were erected from huge stones in the shape of truncated cones. Some of them are two stories high. Their construction and location, usually at mountain passes, offer proof that they were used as defensive structures. They date mainly from the Bronze Age, less frequently from the early Iron Age. Some of the objects from the nuraghi show the influence of the Cretan-Mycenaean culture.
