释义 | Appleton, NathanAppleton, Nathan(1779–1861) manufacturer, banker; born in New Ipswich, N.H. One of the founders of the cotton-mill industry in Massachusetts, he pursued both profits and attractive working conditions for his employees. As a U.S. representative (Whig, Mass.; 1831–33) he argued for a protective tariff and for the Bank of the United States. He wrote Currency and Banking (1841) and was active in Boston's cultural life. |
