Arosemena Monroy, Carlos Julio
(kär`lōs ho͞o`lyō ärōsāmā`nä mōn`roi), 1919–2004, president of Ecuador (1961–63). A lawyer and diplomat and the son and grandson of former presidents, he became vice president in 1960 and acceded to the presidency upon the ouster of President Velasco IbarraVelasco Ibarra, José María, 1893–1979, president of Ecuador (1934–35, 1944–47, 1952–56, 1960–61, 1968–72). A noted orator, he was twice elected president and deposed before succeeding Galo Plaza Lasso as president in 1952.

Although he was criticized for his leftist leanings, real opposition to him arose from his immoderate drinking. After two unsuccessful attempts to impeach him, he was overthrown by a military junta.
