Length approximately 130 km; narrowest breadth, 0.6 km; depth at the southern end, 25–35 m; depth in the northern part, 10–15 m. During severe winters it freezes over. There is a railroad bridge across the Lille Belt, which is crossed by the international railroad linking Hamburg, Copenhagen, and Stockholm.
