On the southwestern border of MN; organized 1863 north of the Minnesota River, disestablished in 1868, then recreated Mar 6, 1871 south of the river. Name Origin: French 'talking lake,' probably a transliteration of Siouan mde'lake,' iye 'speaks,' and dan, a diminutive suffix. Origin uncertain, but possibly for echoes reflected from surrounding cliffs.
