Maryut
a lagoonlike lake in the western part of the Nile Delta, in the Arab Republic of Egypt. The lake is separated from the Mediterranean Sea by a spit on the outer side of which is located the city of Alexandria. It is joined by canal to the Nile. During flooding on the Nile, the area of the lake reaches 200 sq km; after the water recedes, it largely dries up. Salt is extracted here. The permanent level of the lake (3 m) is maintained by pumps.
