Metalici, Muntţi

 

mountains in Rumania, the southern part of the Western Rumanian Mountains. They are composed primarily of basalts, diabases, and andesites as well as crystalline rocks, flysch, and limestones. The relief is extremely dissected, with sharp ridges and cone-shaped peaks of volcanic origin. Elevation, to 1,438 m (Mount Poenita). The slopes are covered with beech and mixed forests and meadows. The mountains were named after deposits of rare and nonferrous metals—including gold, silver, zinc, and lead—which are found there. There are mineral and hot springs in the mountains.
