[′lim·ət kən‚trōl] (mechanical engineering) In boiler operation, usually a device, electrically controlled, that shuts down a burner at a prescribed operating point. In machine-tool operation, a sensing device which terminates motion of the workpiece or tool at prescribed points.

limit control

A safety device on a boiler, refrigerator, or air-conditioning system which shuts off the system and actuates alarms when unsafe conditions are detected. Also see limit switch.
