(mäsjĕd` sōlāmän`), city (1991 pop. 107,539), Khuzestan prov., SW Iran, on the Karun River. The site of the first discovery of petroleum in Iran (1908), it is now an oil-refining center.

a city in Iran in Khuzestan ostan (province). Population, 66,000 (1971). The city is linked by highway with Tehran and Ahvaz (Nasiri). Masjed Soleyman has been an oil center since 1908, although its significance has now declined. Local industries include oil-refining and the production of sulfur by the use of natural gas.
