Mersen, Treaty of 870
Mersen, Treaty of (870)
an agreement concluded in August in Mersen (present-day Meerssen in the Netherlands) between the West Prankish king Charles II the Bald and the East Prankish king Louis the German for the division of Lorraine. The agreement was concluded because Lothar II, the king of Lorraine who had died in 869, left no direct heirs. The West Prankish kingdom took the western part of Lorraine and the East Prankish kingdom the larger, eastern part.
