(MIPS Technologies, Inc., Mountain View, CA, www.mips.com) Founded in 1984 as MIPS Computer Systems Inc., the company merged with SGI in 1992 and spun off as an independent entity once again in 2000. MIPS is the designer of RISC-based microprocessors, which are made under license by NEC, Toshiba, Philips and others. They are widely used in myriad products, including printers and copiers, DVDs and digital TVs. MIPS also licenses its compilers and RISC/OS system software.SGI computers used to be powered by MIPS CPUs, and earlier chips used an "R" designation as in R3000, R4000, R5000, etc. Subsequently, chip models fell into MIPS32 and MIPS64 families.
