Mid-July; Friday and SaturdayThe Robin Hood Festival has taken place in Sherwood, Ore., every year since just after World War II. At that point in the town's history, the economy was slow, and local core businesses were threatened by a new commercial area at Highway 99 called Six Corners. Inspired by the need to help, and also by the re-release of the classic 1938 film The Adventures of Robin Hood, Sherwood's civic leaders decided to capitalize on the legend connected to their town's name. Initially, a group of World War II veterans in Robin Hood costumes made appearances at movie theaters where the film was showing. They were so popular that they were invited back, and soon they were invited to appear at various festivals in the Portland area. It eventually led to the creation of the popular Sherwood event.
The Robin Hood Festival features a parade, a knighting ceremony, live music, comedy, and dancing. Each year a Maid Marian is crowned. Food and plenty of community spirit round out the event.
