Muradova, Bariiat Soltan Medzhidovna

Born Jan. 3 (16), 1914, in Makhachkala. Soviet Kumyk actress. People’s Artist of the USSR (1960).

Muradova first performed in amateur groups. Between 1926 and 1930 she was a soloist with Dagestan Radio. In 1930, after graduating from a music and drama school, she joined the A. P. Salavatov Kumyk Music and Drama Theater in Makhachkala.

Muradova acts with great mastery in tragedies, vaudevilles, comedies of everyday life, and incisively satirical dramas. Among her best roles are Susan in Shirvanzade’s Namus, Kystaman in Salavatov’s Red Partisans, Dzhumaisat in Kurbanov’s Molla Nasretdin, Shakerkhan in Rustamov’s Under the Tree, Dzhaminat in Iakh’iaev’s Irchi Kazak, and Zhivka in Nuŝic’s Madame Minister. She has a beautiful voice and sings folk songs in mountain auls (villages).

Muradova was a deputy to the first convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the Dagestan ASSR and the fifth convocation of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR. A recipient of the K. S. Stanislavsky State Prize of the RSFSR (1972), Muradova has been awarded the Order of Lenin, two other orders, and various medals.
