The landscape is dominated by hills and greatly dissected low mountains composed of volcanic rock that reach heights of 1,250 m. There are coral reefs along the southwestern coast. The climate is subequatorial, and there is about 2,700 mm of precipitation annually. There are tropical rain forests. The island’s population is concentrated along the coast. Morotai has plantations of coconut palms and clove trees. Resin is collected and sago is cultivated.
