North East Island

 

(also Nordaustlandet), an island in the Arctic Ocean, in the Spitsbergen Archipelago; a possession of Norway. North East Island has an area of 14,500 sq km. The northern coast is heavily indented by fjords. The surface of the island is a plateau, with elevations to 637 m. An ice sheet, consisting of a number of glacial domes and having a maximum measured thickness of 564 m, covers 11,135 sq km. Mosses and lichens grow in the ice-free areas. There are no permanent inhabitants.
