Novikov, Sergei Petrovich

 

Born Mar. 20, 1938, in the city of Gorky. Soviet mathematician. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1966). Son of P. S. Novikov.

Novikov graduated from Moscow University in 1960 and became a professor there in 1966. Since 1963 he has worked at the V. A. Steklov Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His main works deal with geometry and topology and associated problems in algebra and the general theory of relativity. Novikov received the Lenin Prize in 1967 and the Fields Prize of the International Mathematical Union in 1970.
