Novikov, Sergei Sergeevich
Born Sept. 24 (Oct. 7), 1909, in Pushkino, Moscow Oblast. Soviet organic chemist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1974). Member of the CPSU since 1940.
Novikov graduated from Moscow State University in 1935. In 1941 he joined the staff of the N. D. Zelinskii Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, and since 1954 he has concurrently served on the staff of the Moscow Physical Engineering Institute. His principal works deal with the catalytic transformations of hydrocarbons and the chemistry of nitro compounds.
Novikov has received the Lenin Prize and the State Prize of the USSR and has been awarded four orders and various medals.
