Novoaltaisk

(until 1962, Chesnokovka), a city (since 1942) under krai jurisdiction and administrative center of Pervomaisk Raion, Altai Krai, RSFSR. Population, 51,000 (1974; 9,000 in 1939).

Novoaltaisk is situated on the right bank of the Ob’ River, opposite the city of Barnaul, with which it is linked by a highway bridge. It is a railroad junction (Altaiskaia) for lines to Novosibirsk, Biisk, Semipalatinsk, and Novokuznetsk. Industrial enterprises include a railroad car factory (constructed in 1941) and a plant producing reinforced-concrete structures. Novoaltaisk has an art school.
