 novobiocin[no″vo-bi´o-sin] an antibacterial produced by Streptomyces niveus, used in the treatment of infections caused by staphylococci and other gram-positive organisms. It should be kept in reserve to be used only when necessary, that is, when resistance to other agents has developed. It is effective against infections caused by penicillin-resistant microorganisms, but organisms have been able to develop resistance to novobiocin rapidly.
