Lago de Poopó
Poopó, Lago de
a salt lake in the Central Andes in Bolivia, situated at an elevation of 3,690 m. It has an area of approximately 2,500 sq km and a maximum depth of 3 m. Flowing from Lake Titicaca, the Desaguadero River empties into Poopó. Sharp fluctuations in the lake’s size and water level (to 20 m) occur, depending on the amount of precipitation. During the rainy season, part of the Poopó’s water seeps through the Lacajahuira River westward into Lago de Coipasa, a salt lake that periodically dries up.
