Mirchink, Mikhail

Born June 2 (15), 1901, in Moscow. Soviet geologist. Corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (1953). Member of the CPSU since 1941.

Mirchink graduated from the Moscow Academy of Mines in 1930. In 1932 he became a professor at the Azerbaijan Industrial Institute and in 1943 a professor at the Moscow I. M. Gubkin Institute of the Petrochemical and Gas Industry. In 1963 he became head of the laboratory of structural geological analysis at the Institute of Geology and the Development of Combustible Minerals of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His principal works have been devoted to the regional geology of the oil- and gas-bearing areas of the Caucasus, the Eastern European Platform, Middle Asia, and Western Siberia and to the development of oil deposits. Mirchink was the founder of a course on oil-field geology. He is the chairman of the Scientific Council on Oil and Gas Formation of the Division of Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (since 1963). A recipient of the State Prize of the USSR in 1949 and 1950, Mirchink has been awarded two Orders of Lenin, the Order of the October Revolution, three other orders, and various medals.
