a formula used in estimating animal population sizes through a mark-and-recapture technique. A number of animals are trapped, marked and released back into the population. Assuming no immigration or emigration, and the random distribution of the marked animals throughout the population, the comparison of the numbers of marked and unmarked animals in the second trapping gives an estimate of the population from the formula
