Meskheti

Land of the Meskhi (one of the Georgian tribes), the historical name for a part of southern Georgia. In the second half of the 13th century it became part of the SamtskheSaatabago Principality. It was conquered by Turkey in the 16th century. According to the Treaty of Adrianople of 1829, the northern part of Meskheti was unified with Russia.

(also Adzhar-Imereti), a mountain range in the Lesser Caucasus, in the Georgian SSR. It extends for 150 km from the Adzhar coast of the Black Sea to the Borzhomi gorge of the Kura River. Elevation, to 2,850 m (Mount Mepistskaro). Meskheti is composed of sedimentary flysch and volcanogenic rocks (tuffs, andesites). There are mountain meadow landscapes on the crests and luxuriant broadleaved forests of beech and hornbeam and coniferous forests on the slopes.
