Lindenau, Jakob

(Iakov Ivanovich Lindenau). Born circa 1700; died 1795. Russian traveler and scholar. Of Swedish origin.

Lindenau was a member of the Second Kamchatka Expedition (1737–46), led by G. F. Miller and I. Fisher; later, he held administrative posts in Siberia. He compiled a number of geographical and ethnographic descriptions of localities and peoples in Siberia (the most detailed of which was his Description of the Yakuts). All of Lindenau’s manuscript materials (written in German) are preserved in the Central State Archives of Ancient Acts (Moscow) and in the archives of the Yakut Branch of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR.
