(1) A waterfall in eastern Africa (Uganda) on the Victoria Nile River, 32 km above the river’s influx into Lake Mobutu Sese Seko (Lake Albert). Elevation, 40 m; width at the narrowest section, approximately 6 m. The falls were discovered in 1864 by S. Baker and named for the English geologist and geographer R. I. Murchison.

(2) A series of rapids and waterfalls in the middle course of the Shire River (a tributary of the Zambezi River) in Malawi. Length of the rapids, approximately 40 km. Discovered by D. Livingstone in 1859.
