Murgulescu, Ilie
Born Jan. 27, 1902, in Cornu, Dolj District. Rumanian chemist, public figure, and statesman; academician of the Academy of the Socialist Republic of Rumania (SRR) since 1952.
From 1960 to 1963, Murgulescu was minister of education and culture and vice-president of the Academy of the SRR, serving as president of that body from 1963 to 1966. He has been a member of the Central Committee of the Rumanian Communist Party and deputy chairman of the Grand National Assembly of the SRR since 1969. He has also served as deputy chairman of the General Council of the Society for Rumanian-Soviet Friendship since 1955.
Murgulescu’s main works are devoted to problems in physical and analytical chemistry. He was awarded the State Prize of the SRR in 1963 for his research on the physicochemical properties of fused salts. Murgulescu has been director of the Center of Physical Chemistry since 1963 and a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR since 1966.
