Murie, Olaus (Johann)

(1889–1926) conservationist; born in Moorhead, Minn. He worked as an Oregon game warden, as a field naturalist for the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh, and as a researcher for the U.S. Biological Survey. He carried out important research in wildlife conservation in Alaska, Canada, and New Zealand and served on the council of the Wilderness Society from 1937 until his death. His definitive Elk of North America appeared in 1951.
