Mirozha Monastery

an architectural complex in Pskov, built between the 12th and 19th centuries. It was founded before 1156. The Spaso-Preobrazhenskii Cathedral, a wellknown monument of 12th-century Russian art, is part of the complex. The cruciform, single-domed structure was built before 1156 and was constructed from bricks and stone. It had corbeled arches resting on the western columns and the eastern wall, a massive drum, and markedly low western corner cells and lateral apses. The cathedral acquired an austere and somewhat heavy look after the addition of the western corners, the narthex, and the belfry and after the replacement of the parapeted roof by a sloping one. It was decorated with frescoes (presumably by Greek artisans) circa 1156. Other ancient buildings of the Mirozha Monastery have not survived. There are remains of 17th-century stone chambers, the 17th-century Church of St. Stephen, and a stone wall built between 1799 and 1805.
