Laikmaa, Ants

(until 1935, Hans Laipman). Born Apr. 23 (May 5), 1866, in Vigala, in present-day Rapla Raion; died Nov. 19, 1942, in Taebla, Haapsalu Raion. Estonian artist and public figure. One of the founders of the national school of art.

Laikmaa was a student at the Academy of Arts in Dusseldorf at various times between 1891 and 1897. He participated in the revolutionary movement in the Baltic Region from 1905 to 1907. Laikmaa organized and directed an art school and studio in Tallinn (1903–07 and 1913–32). Working mainly in pastels, he created truthful portraits, which are marked by profound social characterizations of the sitters. He also executed landscapes. In 1960 a memorial museum was organized in Laikmaa’s house in Taebla.
