Deflation or compression of lung tissues caused either by obstruction of a main bronchus by a mucus plug, tumor, or foreign body; major trauma; or a tension pneumothorax. See: lung; pneumothorax

Symptoms

This condition is marked by dyspnea, cyanosis, shock, and chest pain.

Treatment

If caused by mucus or foreign body, therapy consists of bronchoscopy, pulmonary toilet, antibiotics, and oxygen.
